What to do if fuel consumption increases?

Fuel consumption is also a topic of concern for motorcycle enthusiasts. After using a motorcycle for a period of time, the fuel consumption rate will increase and the power will decrease. This is a manifestation of a problem in a certain part of the car. For motorcycle enthusiasts who have some basic knowledge, they can use several simple self checking methods to find the problem of an increase in fuel consumption rate.

Tire Pressure

During the trip, I found that my beloved motorcycle's sliding distance has significantly decreased, and the sliding effect on downhill roads has weakened. It is more difficult to push empty vehicles than before. At this point, the car owner should check whether the tire pressure meets the standard. If the tires are insufficiently inflated, fuel consumption will increase significantly.

Wear and looseness

If you find front or rear wheels swinging on the road, you should immediately check the tire pressure and wear level, as well as whether the wheels and cantilevers are loose. If the tires are severely worn or the air pressure is insufficient, there will often be oscillation, especially when there are longitudinal grooves on the road surface.

Bearings and brakes

If abnormal noise is found on the wheel axle during driving or starting, the bearings and brake system should be checked for faults in a timely manner. If the wheels do not rotate properly, the brake pads will become sticky and the wheels will heat up, which will affect the speed and stability, and increase fuel consumption.

Clutch slipping

The clutch block of the scooter slips, which can affect the maximum speed and uphill torque, and can also cause nearby components to overheat. When accelerating rapidly, it is found that the engine speed increases rapidly, but the vehicle speed increases slowly, indicating that the clutch is slipping.

Aging of piston rings

After a motorcycle travels 20000 kilometers, the piston rings usually wear out=leak air, resulting in insufficient cylinder pressure. Cold start feels relatively easy, but it is not easy to successfully ignite. The poor sealing of the cylinder will significantly increase fuel consumption.

Valve not tight

Starting feels relatively easy, but it is not easy to start a cold engine. After starting, the engine is not very powerful and the fuel consumption rate is high. For a four stroke engine, it is common for the valve to not close tightly, which affects starting and power output. Just adjust it.

Air filter and carburetor

When the exhaust pipe often emits black smoke, fuel consumption increases, and spark plug carbon deposits are severe, it is necessary to check the air filter and adjust the carburetor. If you don't know how to disassemble and clean the carburetor, you can spray a cleaning agent directly onto the intake port of the carburetor several times during idle operation. The foam plastic core of the air filter is easy to be blocked by dust, and it must be disassembled and cleaned within half a year at most; If the paper core cannot be washed, replace it. After cleaning the air filter and carburetor, if there is no effect, it is possible that the oil level is too high and the carburetor needs to be disassembled for cleaning and adjustment.

Electric heating enrichment valve
The scooter is difficult to start and the fuel consumption rate is always high; Pay special attention to checking the electric enrichment valve on the carburetor. Check if it heats up after startup! If it doesn't heat up, it's usually because the wiring is disconnected and not powered on=the enrichment is always on. Some cars that use a plunger carburetor usually adjust the carburetor to be very fuel-efficient in order to accelerate rapidly and effectively.

Vacuum film carburetor
The vacuum film carburetor on the scooter, when used to a certain extent, will block the starting oil outlet hole, affecting the starting process. That section of the oil circuit is a dead end, and it is difficult for most people to clean it properly even after disassembly, which is a dead end in the structure of this carburetor. The usual approach is to increase the main oil and idle oil, and use high and low revs with rich oil at both ends to drive the entire vehicle through this lean oil zone.

Chronic oil leakage

It is difficult to start overnight, and there is a smell of gasoline in the car body. It is necessary to check if there is a slight oil leak in the carburetor and fuel system? Some carburetors have loose bottoms or cracked oil pipes, which can cause chronic oil leakage and unknowingly waste a lot. The most hateful thing is that there are some subtle cracks that leak oil only during bumpy driving, and gasoline evaporates on the spot when exposed to heat, which is very dangerous!

Belt pulley wear

When the fuel consumption rate of the scooter is getting higher and higher, it is necessary to check whether the belt and pulley, as well as the Puli bead, have been worn out? Especially for those who feel that the engine is struggling, fuel consumption is high, and the speed is not high, it is usually related to the wear of the belt pulley. Loose belt pulleys have a phenomenon of "trapping" the belt during operation; This tightening of the belt will double fuel consumption.

Spark plug aging

After using the spark plug for one year, the electrode is burned by the electric spark=the electrode spark gap is too large, making it difficult to ignite during startup. Another issue is improper adjustment of the carburetor. Prolonged oil accumulation can lead to carbon buildup in the spark plug, making it difficult for the cold engine to start and ignite. Maintenance method: Remove the spark plug, manually scrape off the carbon deposits, adjust the electrode gap, and test how many millimeters can be ignited.
